What Are Quartz Countertops Made Of
Quartz countertops are an engineered stone product used in residential and commercial kitchen and bath applications. Quartz countertops are made by mixing and compressing natural quartz derived from granite and epoxy resins to create a hard wearing and stain-impervious surface. Quartz countertops are molded and milled to standard sizes and thickness but can easily be manufactured to custom specifications. They come in a wide variety of colors and at a lower price point than 100 percent natural stone with less maintenance.
Quartz Elements
· Ninety-five percent of quartz countertops include quartz granules both large and small--like the range of salt crystals from kosher to rock salt. Binders making up the rest.
Resin Makes the Bond
· Once the quartz is mined and an aggregate mix is selected, the quartz crystals are combined with liquid resin and colorants into a slurry.
Colorants
· Quartz countertops are manufactured in dozens of colors that are produced by adding dyes to the quartz and resin slurry before compression and curing, so that the countertop is a consistent color throughout.
Compression
· The slurry is heated and vibrated and then poured into molds and compacted under heavy pressure to form an hard solid.
Standard Slab Sizing
· Because quartz counter top slabs are not quarried but man made, they are available in relatively large slabs usually measuring 54 inches in width and 122 inches in length. Larger slab sizes and complex curvatures and shaping are possible.
Care and Maintenance
· Quartz countertops are very low maintenance, do not require maintenance polishing and are impervious to stains, oils and burns that would permanently scar natural porous stone materials.
